Why I chose to research this topic
Growing up in a time where being on several social media platforms has definitely shaped the way many individuals view themselves and others. I wanted to completely understand how young women feel and think about themselves while being active on social media, while being influenced by celebrities, models and other influencers. Being a young women, I wanted to learn more about other perspectives and create awareness to share with my audience and fellow peers.
English
For the English portion of my project, I created a poem written in the perspective of a young women. The poem is about how that young women feels about herself after seeing many other beautiful women on her social media feeds. It discusses ideas such as the strive to look as impossible as the photoshopped models online. A stanza states
"Stop tearing these little girls apart, When they are just trying to find themselves, Love themselves, Be themselves. You are making them want to look Impossible" The goal of my poem was to show the audience how many young women feel about themselves because of the unrealistic standards of social media. |

Art
For the art portion of my project, I created a blackout poetry style product. The product was in the perspective of a young women who is trying to look like all of the women shown in magazines, and is reading about all of the popular diets, only to find out she is hurting her mental health. I cut out pages from actual magazines that included diets and other popular ways to lose weight. My goal for my product was to show awareness to what many young women go through in terms of self esteem and being unhappy with their appearance.
