Why I chose to research this. topic
For my first project of my 2020-2021 school year, I researched about mental health awareness and stigma in the United States. I decided that I would stick with the topic of mental health and psychology. I wanted to understand the perspective of an individual going through depression by analyzing artwork and poems and conducting more research as well. Mental health has always been a topic that has interested me and I want to keep pursuing this topic throughout my other projects as well.
English
For the English portion of my project, I researched the life story of Silvia Plath and analyzed poems that she wrote in her perspective discussing mental health, specifically depression, that she suffered with. I analyzed her three poems, Edge, Mad Girls Love and Lady Lazarus. I used the organizer SOAPSTone to analyze and annotate the poems during and after I was reading them. I wanted to understand the perspective of an individual who was dealing with their depression and the thoughts and feelings that they may experience. Reading her poems helped me truly understand what she went through on a daily basis and her struggles that many of us may not face or just even understand. After reading an analyzing the poems written by her, I created my own poem called, "Deep Thoughts" from the perspective of a young women who is suffering from depression. I also analyzed my own poem I was able to use what I learned from Plath's poems and put it into my own product, which ultimately gave ,me a deeper understanding because I was able to think about how an individual may use specific words to express their pain and other emotions as well.

Art
For the art portion of my project, I created a painting in the perspective of an individual experiencing depression. I researched different artists who painted about depression and I was inspired to create my own product. My painting shows perspective from the thought bubbles/clouds at the top of the canvas showing that the negative thoughts/emotions take over the individuals head. While creating my painting, I was able to create an understanding of how someone with depression may feel or think on a daily basis. I was able to dig deeper to understand their perspective and create that same perspective from my own understanding after the research that was conducted.

Social Studies
For the social studies portion of my project, I researched the psychology behind campaign ads and how big money advertising is viewed from the perspective of a young voter. The product that I created was a letter written to an editor about my opinion about the impact that big money advertising has, the effectiveness on the type of political ad is produced, and how to make sure a viewer enjoys and remembers a specific political campaign ad. I conducted research to understand both perspectives, individuals who think that big money advertising is important compared to the effectiveness and psychology of creating a campaign ad that is successful and vise versa. It gave me a better understanding and view of both arguments so that when I went to go and write my letter, I was able to give the most accurate and effective points within my writing.
